Prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases

It is estimated that 5.6-6.6 million people in the U.S. suffer from neurodegenerative disorders and thousands more are stricken each year. There are currently no effective alternate treatments for these diseases. The company plans to market its therapeutics through strategic relationships with larger partners such as consumer products and/or pharmaceutical companies.

Quincy Bioscience believes strategic partnerships will accelerate the time table to delivering healthcare solutions to the millions diagnosed as well as serve the families who are challenged to provide care for their loved ones in the face of these realities:

  • Approximately 5.3 million people have Alzheimer’s disease. The number of people with Alzheimer’s doubles every 5 years beyond age 65.
  • The number of people with such diseases is expected to increase substantially in coming years as the large baby boom generation grows older. Those 65 yrs and older are projected to grow from 39 million in 2008 to 72 million in 2030, when all baby boomers will be 65+ years of age.
  • Medicare costs for persons 65 years and older are three times higher for those diagnosed with a memory disorder, representing a major fiscal need for solutions.
  • Existing dietary supplements and therapeutics which target neurodegenerative diseases generally have very limited effectiveness. In many cases they address symptoms but not the underlying cause of the disease.

In effect, the size of the market for products to control neurodegenerative diseases will be expanding, yet present products have not proven very effective. This is the market opportunity facing apoaequorin, which Quincy Bioscience intends to introduce for prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and as an age-fighting dietary supplement.
